How to Prepare for the UPSSSC Junior Assistant Typing Test
The speed you need, how mistakes are counted, Hindi and English typing, and a four-week practice plan.
For UPSSSC Junior Assistant candidates, the typing test is the step between a good written-exam score and a job offer. It is short and qualifying, but many candidates lose their selection here — not for lack of speed, but because they practised the wrong way. This guide explains what the UPSSSC Junior Assistant typing test involves, the speed you need, how mistakes are counted and how to prepare in four weeks.
What Is the UPSSSC Junior Assistant Typing Test?
The Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UPSSSC) recruits Junior Assistants and similar clerical posts through a written exam followed by a skill test on a computer. The typing test checks that you can type a passage at the required speed and accuracy. It is qualifying in nature: you must reach the standard, but your typing result is not added to your merit marks.
Required Speed and Duration
Recent notifications have set the following for the English typing test. Standards can change between recruitments, so always check the notification for your exam.
| Test | Speed | Notes |
|---|
| English typing | 30 words per minute | Practise with a 10-minute timer |
| Hindi typing | As set in the notification | Commonly typed in the Krutidev (Remington) layout |
Recent UPSSSC Junior Assistant notifications have included Hindi typing as well as English. Read the skill test section of your notification carefully: it states which languages you must type in, the speed for each and the layout used for Hindi.
Check the Hindi layout: If your notification names Krutidev or Remington for Hindi, practise in that layout only. Inscript (Mangal) puts letters on different keys, so Inscript practice does not carry over. Our guide "Inscript vs Krutidev" explains the difference.
How Mistakes Are Counted
Your typed text is compared with the passage word by word. Omitted, added, wrong and misspelled words are usually counted as full mistakes. Spacing, capitalization and punctuation errors are usually half mistakes. Mistakes are deducted from your speed, and your error percentage must stay within the permitted limit. The notification describes the exact method — read it before you start practising so you know what counts against you.
In practice, this means accuracy matters as much as speed. A candidate typing 34 WPM with many errors can fail, while one typing 31 WPM cleanly passes.
A Four-Week Preparation Plan
| Week | Focus | Daily practice (30–45 min) |
|---|
| 1 | Accuracy | Two full 10-minute tests at a comfortable pace. Aim for 97% accuracy, not speed. |
| 2 | Weak keys | Find your most-missed keys in your results and drill real words that use them. One full test. |
| 3 | Speed | Short 1-minute sprints 3–5 WPM above your pace, then one full test at normal pace. Keep accuracy above 95%. |
| 4 | Exam simulation | One full test daily in exact exam settings, with a fresh passage each time. No new techniques. |
If your exam includes Hindi typing, split your daily time between the two languages from the first week, giving more time to whichever is weaker.

Habits That Cost Candidates Their Selection
- Looking down at the keyboard. It caps your speed and causes skipped words when you look back at the passage.
- Stopping to fix every mistake. Corrections take several key presses; often a half mistake costs less than the time spent fixing it.
- Ignoring punctuation and capital letters, which add up as half mistakes.
- Practising only the passages you already know. Use a fresh passage every time.
- Practising Hindi in a different layout from the one your exam uses.
On the Day of the Test
- Arrive early, and check the keyboard, chair and screen before the test begins.
- Read the first line of the passage before you start typing.
- Keep a steady pace. Rushing in the first minute usually leads to errors later.
- If you make a mistake, decide quickly whether to fix it or move on — do not freeze.
