01 Digital India
The Digital India programme was launched to transform the country into a digitally empowered society and a knowledge economy. Over the last decade, internet access has reached villages that once depended on long journeys to government offices for simple certificates. Today, a farmer can check the price of crops, apply for a loan and receive subsidies directly in a bank account. Students in small towns attend online classes and prepare for competitive examinations using free resources. However, the digital divide has not disappeared. Many citizens still lack reliable connectivity, affordable devices and the skills needed to use online services safely. Cyber fraud is rising, and awareness must grow along with access. The success of the programme will finally depend on whether technology makes the lives of ordinary people simpler, safer and more dignified.
02 Water conservation
Water is the foundation of life, yet it is one of the most carelessly used resources in our daily routine. India holds nearly eighteen percent of the world population but only about four percent of its fresh water. Rapid urbanisation, the overuse of groundwater for farming and the pollution of rivers have pushed many regions towards scarcity. Traditional methods such as stepwells, village ponds and rooftop collection once helped communities store rain for the dry months. Reviving these practices, along with drip irrigation and the recycling of waste water, can ease the pressure on our reserves. Every household can contribute by fixing leaking taps and avoiding waste. Conservation is not the duty of the government alone; it is a shared responsibility of every citizen.
03 Public libraries
A public library is one of the few places where knowledge is offered to everyone without asking for anything in return. For a student preparing for a competitive examination, it provides a quiet desk, newspapers, reference books and the company of others who share the same goal. Many successful candidates from modest families credit their local library for their selection. In recent years, several states have opened digital libraries with computers and internet access, so that rural youth can read current affairs and practise mock tests. Libraries also preserve local history, manuscripts and records that would otherwise be lost. To remain relevant, they must extend their hours, update their collections and welcome readers of every age.
04 Road safety
Road accidents claim thousands of lives in India every year, and most of them can be prevented. Speeding, drunk driving, the use of mobile phones while driving and the neglect of helmets and seat belts remain the leading causes. The Motor Vehicles Act has raised penalties for traffic violations, but strict laws alone cannot change behaviour. Road safety must be taught in schools, practised at home and enforced consistently on the streets. Better road design, clear signboards, proper lighting and quick emergency care during the first hour after an accident can save many lives. By following traffic rules, respecting pedestrians and helping victims without fear, each of us can make our roads safer.
05 Solar energy
India receives abundant sunshine for most of the year, and solar energy has become one of the fastest growing sources of electricity in the country. Large solar parks in Rajasthan and Gujarat now supply power to millions of homes, while rooftop panels allow families and small businesses to produce their own electricity and sell the surplus to the grid. Solar pumps help farmers irrigate their fields without expensive diesel. The cost of panels has fallen sharply over the past decade, making clean energy affordable for ordinary people. Challenges remain, including the storage of power for the night and the safe disposal of old panels. With steady investment, local manufacturing and trained technicians, solar energy can reduce pollution and strengthen the energy security of the nation.
06 Digital payments
Digital payments have changed the way Indians buy and sell goods. A vegetable seller, a taxi driver and a large shop can all accept money instantly through a mobile phone by scanning a simple code. The Unified Payments Interface made it possible to transfer money between bank accounts at any hour, without visiting a branch or filling in a form. This has brought millions of new users into the formal banking system and reduced the need to carry cash. However, the growth of online transactions has also attracted fraudsters who trick people into sharing passwords or one-time codes. Users must never share these details with anyone, and banks must continue to educate their customers. Safe habits are as important as convenient technology.
07 Educating girls
Educating a girl benefits not only her own future but also the health and prosperity of her entire family. Studies have shown that educated women tend to take better care of their children's health and play a more active part in the economic life of their communities. Over the past two decades, the enrolment of girls in schools has risen steadily, helped by free textbooks, scholarships, separate toilets and bicycles for students in rural areas. Yet many girls still leave school early because of household duties, safety concerns or the distance to the nearest college. Parents, teachers and local bodies must work together to keep girls in classrooms. A nation that gives equal opportunities to its daughters prepares itself for a stronger and fairer tomorrow.
08 Skill development
A degree alone is no longer enough to secure a good job. Employers increasingly look for practical skills such as computer literacy, clear communication and the ability to work in a team. Skill development programmes aim to close this gap by training young people in trades like electrical work, tailoring, healthcare assistance, data entry and the repair of mobile phones. Many of these courses are short, affordable and linked to local industries, so that trainees can find employment soon after completing them. For candidates preparing for government jobs, fast and accurate typing is an equally valuable skill, because it is tested directly in the selection process. Learning a skill is an investment that continues to pay returns throughout a working life.
09 Disaster preparedness
India faces natural disasters such as floods, cyclones, earthquakes and landslides almost every year. In the past, the response to these events was often slow, and many lives were lost because people did not receive warnings in time. Today, better weather forecasting, satellite monitoring and mobile alerts allow the authorities to evacuate villages before a cyclone reaches the coast. Trained rescue teams are positioned in vulnerable areas, and schools conduct regular drills so that children know what to do during an earthquake. Yet preparedness must begin at home. Every family should keep a basic emergency kit, know the location of the nearest shelter and follow official instructions calmly. When citizens and institutions work together, the damage caused by disasters can be greatly reduced.
10 Health and yoga
A healthy body is the foundation of a productive life, yet modern routines leave little time for exercise. Long hours at a desk, irregular meals and too much screen time have contributed to a rise in diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity, even among young people. Yoga offers a simple and affordable way to stay fit. It needs no expensive equipment and can be practised at home for twenty or thirty minutes a day. Regular practice improves flexibility, strengthens the muscles and helps to reduce stress. Along with exercise, a balanced diet with fresh fruits and vegetables, enough sleep and limited use of sugar and oil are essential. Small changes in daily habits, followed consistently, can protect our health for many years.
