How your typing speed is calculated
- Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Every 5 characters, spaces included, count as one word.
- Net WPM = Gross WPM − (full mistakes + ½ × half mistakes) ÷ minutes. This is the speed exams judge you on.
- Accuracy = 100 − error %. Error % = (full mistakes + ½ × half mistakes) ÷ words typed × 100.
- KDPH = key presses × 60 ÷ minutes. Key depressions per hour, used by SSC CGL DEST and CPCT.

How long should my typing test be?
Choose 2 or 5 minutes for quick practice and 10 or 15 minutes to build exam stamina. Most government typing tests last 10 to 15 minutes.
What is a good English typing speed for government exams?
Recent notifications set 35 net WPM for SSC CHSL and 30 net WPM for RRB NTPC and many state exams, with errors within about 5%. Check the notification for your exam.
How is WPM calculated?
Gross WPM = characters typed (including spaces) ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. Net WPM = gross WPM − (full mistakes + ½ × half mistakes) ÷ minutes. Exams judge you on net speed.
